Welcome to "Are You Serious?"

Poets & Writers: Post your original work to get feedback and gain recognition.

General Public: "DO" Blog about whatever issue moves you. "Don't" Post status type messages. There are sites where that type of "writing" is acceptable & (even) expected. This Blog/Group is definitely not one of those sites. We love our members, readers, and anyone who takes interest in our blog - yes. However, we do try to keep the blog moving in the most intelligent, thought provoking, and creative direction as is humanly possible. Social Network sites are better suited for the un-intelligable words of "Share something new."

Readers: Post your feelings/thoughts about anything you've read. If the original post was a piece of "work" (poetry/writing) then let the writer know what you think about their work. If the original post is "opinion" or any other "topic-oriented" blog then, by all means, add your thoughts to whatever issue was posted.

No Matter who you are or what your motives are for being here so long as you have an IQ to back up whatever thoughts or opinions you put up on the board and, as long as you are not an ego, pride-driven superstar without any other fans besides you and your mom, everyone should enjoy being here and have fun with whatever the plot is that they are thickening to taste.

Now, buckle up (I have a tendancy to blow up the joint once in a while). I am looking for many other like-minded (twisted) individuals to help this place find a location on the map. Any map...

What's in Your Wallet?

It doesn't take a genius to realize that greed is not only controlling all aspects of the world today, but it is (also) destroying humanity along with Mother Earth.

Just take a look around you on any given day at any given moment. The, once thriving, middle class in this country has diminished to almost nothing due to the greed of various corporations outsourcing the middle-class jobs to other, cheap labor countries. Everyone is aware of this fact and if they aren't it's because they're either mentally challenged or not paying attention. Hell, it is such an employer's market these days that employers can get away with not giving out raises for years at a time, not giving Christmas bonuses (as they once did in the recent past), not paying "holiday pay" or even offering paid time off/paid vacation let alone paid sick days. Oh, and let's not exclude the employers who are hiring the unemployed masses to do an unpaid, 90 day internship. That's right, there are employers out there with the audacity to expect someone to give up their unemployment benefits by taking a job which will not pay them for an entire 90 days. This time allows the employer to see what kind of employee the intern would be should they decide to hire the poor schmuck after the 90 day internship is completed.

The executives and owners of these companies and corporations still make millions of dollars per year for their un-deserved salaries while the people who are the backbones of each company get their benefits, wages, and (even) jobs cut completely out of the picture. There is nothing fair about what is taking place in this country (predominantly) and many other countries around the globe. It's all designed to keep the wealthiest one percent the wealthiest one percent as well as allowing them to control our government by way of campaign contributions and payoffs. Both of which are entirely legal yet, as inappropriate as it is for this to be legal, it continues to go on election after election and year after year.

When will the American people (the decent, hard working individuals who drive the economy and make the wealthiest one percent all their money) - yes - when will all of us "good Americans" wake up and realize that the greedy, money hoarding, power hungry bastards controlling this country and driving what used to be a country made up of multiple financial classes into a four class system. The four classes being the very rich, the rich, the poor, and the very poor. Those are the four classes which are quickly taking up the old class system of this country. This has all come to pass within my short life of 41 years.

I remember, as a child, seeing a multitude of classes (the old class system) in this country. In my  early childhood we were a middle class family. As I matured so did our family's financial status. By the time I was an adolescent we were considered upper-middle class. By the time I was a teenager we were considered upper-upper-middle class (just a step down from rich). There were many other classes as well. There were the poor (people who worked for minimum wage or slightly above). There were the very poor (people who relied upon welfare or social security as their only source of income). There were the three tiers of middle class which my family went through plus the additional tier of lower-middle class which was a step down from middle class and a step up from poor. Then there was the wide variety of wealthy classes. They were divided up as follows:  the slightly-rich, the moderately-rich, the rich, the very-rich, the very-very-rich, and (finally) the wealthiest of the wealthy or the "elite."

The children who are being born at this time or even as long as ten years ago do not have any idea of the class system which I just mentioned. The broad spectrum of financial classes we used to enjoy as citizens of this once great country. I say, "once great," because there is little to be proud of concerning our country, its economy, the programs it offers its citizens to pursue the old American dream, and so on. I say, "old American dream," because what used to be the American dream has dissipated into the unobtainable for most of us. The old American dream was everyone becoming homeowners at least once within their lifetime, everyone owning at least two, new (or nearly new) automobiles, everyone being able to take a family vacation at least once a year, and (finally) everyone being able to get married and start a family of two or more children. I neglected the biggest part of that old American dream which is every individual could become as wealthy as they desired if they (merely) worked hard and relentlessly pursued their vision of their dream. It was not only a "dream" not too long ago it was the very essence of this country and it was (for many people) reality.

I am so sad and disgusted to say that there is no such thing as that beautiful American dream becoming reality for everyone at this point in time. No, the only people that dream turning to reality applies to are already living the dream. The rest of the good people of this once, great nation are stuck in the cycle of being stuck. Stuck is working a job that pays just enough to pay for housing, utilities, gas to get you back and forth to work every day, insurance on a car that may be new or very old, the bare minimum of food that will last from one paycheck to the next (not even good food that you really enjoy eating or your kids bug you to buy--just stuff that will fill your tummy and keep you alive to stay stuck), and--if you're fortunate--a little left over to pay for grooming. Most of us aren't even allowed the luxury of good grooming these days. Grooming not only includes hair cuts and hygienic products. It, also, includes clothing, shoes, purses (for women), dental visits to keep your mouth healthy and teeth clean, and various other things that we used to take for granted when times were so good. Back when anyone who pursued the dream could make it a reality.

Well, my fellow Americans, I could go on and on about how fucked up we as a society have become.  How fucked up our government has become (even though our president, I believe, has integrity and vision to make good, positive changes for every citizen of this country). How incredibly stupid the average American citizen has become. How the media spews negative rhetoric controlled by the big corporations and companies that have, by the greed of their owners and/or shareholders/executives, destroyed the old American dream and replaced it with "stuck." Along with many other equally important pieces to this complex, yet not so complicated, problem we call staying stuck with hopes of surviving long enough that stuck eventually turns into motion.

I will guarantee that stuck becomes motion. What I can not guarantee is that the motion we begin to move or the direction we begin heading towards will be something better. In fact, it is more likely (considering who's running the show we call "the world") that the direction we move towards will be like falling backwards down a mountain we've all been climbing for a very long time. A mountain so steep and tall that we've exhausted all our resources and strength yet (somehow) we continue to climb. Only until the last bit of sweat drips down the back of our necks and, due to that drop of sweat weighing enough to throw our balance back in its direction, our entire bodies fall backwards. We continue to fall back down the mountain, but not sliding down on our backs. Rather we are rolling backwards from head to toes to head to toes breaking each and every bone while puncturing each and every organ of which our bodies are made. Finally, half dead, we reach the bottom. Yes, we did hit every tree on our way down still that's not quite enough suffering for the wealthy onlookers to have witnessed. You see, as we were falling they dug a hole (a bottomless pit) for us to land in when reaching the bottom. They did this so they could hear our voices echo loudly with pain and fear as we would continue to fall for eternity or until they have finished destroying this planet--whichever comes first.

And that's the way the human ball bounces (as it were)...

Health Care/Western Novel

I was going to take the liberty of posting a comment regarding the medical situation in general, but since I'm on the govt-run medicare program I won't, except to say that medicare will be broke by 2017 under the present financial setup, and who knows what's going to happen if they pass the new bill.

That said, for the readers, I've published a book through iuniverse entitled, The Stranger from the Valley, a novel of the western genre, which is available at iuniverse.com, amazon.com, bn.com, and others, and the e-book is available at iuniverse.com for only $6.00. Chappie Wesford is sent to Altaveel to give awards to two citizens sometime after the Civil War, but the Henberry family thinks he is there to take over their business, and the fun begins. Altaveel is a fictional town located in the Uintah foothills.

I've had many compliments on the book from people who have said they read it and enjoyed it, and I'm sure that you will too. I have posted excerpts from this book and others on my blog at the above link.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

Society's Subtle Sickness

Conformity is so common in our society created from capitalism. People sell others out to get ahead in jobs or other things. Many are quick to judge their peers as something less than themselves. They can’t help it because it’s the only way they can feel superior.

When reality creeps out from underneath the breath of silent bystanders it may very well be ignored as the masses are listening to their IPods. Truth, though often sought after, isn’t always warm and inviting. It can be as coarse as a cactus and equally hard to swallow. Should it miss the reciprocator’s vocal chords on the way down she may be able to reply without the mess of coughing up blood. Then she'll return jagged words, equally hard to swallow, to the instigator. Both have their own version of what is real -what is their truth. Although each picture of reality may be entirely different from the other, every version should be considered with objectivity and scrutiny. Something in between will form a shape that resembles fact even if it’s ugly to look at.

Even if it’s not pretty to see it may be hard to look away. It's like staring at a horrible crash on the freeway - we’re rubber-necks - unable to resist urges to catch a glimpse of something hideous. We cause traffic to slow down and back up for miles. It's all affecting others. Maybe some day we’ll evolve to the point of speeding up to miss the sight of such tragedies and mind our own business.

Combining all forums of "Are You Serious?"

After having "Are You Serious?" set up on several different hosts it appears that one host has established more membership than all the others. The host is webs.com and here's the link to "Are You Serious?" on that host. I encourage all my members on this Yuku hosted site to go to the link I provided and join that hosts version of our group. I would like to eliminate all the unnecessary forums and have only one "Are You Serious?" which was determined to be the best version according to which forum the members chose to join. In other words, the forum decided upon was decided by our members. Members viewed all forums and joined the forum which they liked best.

Thank you for being a part of this group. Every single member is an important piece to the whole. I value all of your membership and, especially, your participation in the group. Please join us at webs.com.

Thank you for your help with maintaining high membership and quality members. I appreciate all of you more than you know. Also, I encourage all of you who follow us over to webs.com to actively participate in the group either by reading other's work and providing feedback or by posting your own work. All activity is necessary for the group to thrive and recruit new members. The more members we have participating the more membership will grow and flourish.

A group with thriving membership offers so much to each member in so many ways. If a member is promoting his or her work or published books it offers a high volume of exposure for that writer. If a member is trying to better their skill as a writer it offers multiply members providing them with valuable feedback. If a member enjoys reading new work it allows that member to read various styles and subject matter that they would otherwise miss. It, also, allows the reading members a chance to help a writer improve their writing ability by that member providing feedback/critique to the writer. This is what a writing group is all about and I've been privileged in the past by being a part of so many thriving writing groups prior to MSN's removal of their groups in 2008. I have learned so much as a writer of prose, opinion, and poetry by being a part of several writing groups who had a thriving membership coupled with a high volume of activity from a diverse crowd of people.

Thanks, again, for all that you do to make "Are You Serious?" grow and prosper. We do not make money by running a writing group but we do help each other, as well as ourselves, grow as writers.

A time for analysis.

Why are the idiots on capital hill wasting time to pass affordable health care reform?

The reason they waste time and won't agree to a public option is because they have never been in a situation where they didn't have the coverage they need combined with not having the money to cover what the insurance doesn't pay.

If any of these schmucks were really in touch with their constituents who are struggling to get good medical care because they can't afford it then there wouldn't be such a debate.

It sickens me to no end watching these entitled, rich people waste time with something so important to people who are not so fortunate. I am one of those people. I can't afford to get the care I need so I'm suffering on a daily basis. On top of my physical suffering I get to stress about the medical bills I have accumulated which did not accomplish a proper diagnosis and treatment plan or any form of a solution. Just wasted money that I didn't have in the first place.

If I lived in France, I would be in the hospital until they could determine what the cause of my physical issue is and then form a solution and implement that solution to fix the problem. The entire time I would be in the hospital I wouldn't have to stress about losing my job. In fact, I would be paid a percentage of my income for that time so I would be able to pay bills. My job would be waiting for me no matter how long my solution took to implement. I would return to work healthier and more capable of doing my best work. The best part is that I would not be overwhelmed with medical bills either. My treatment wouldn't cost me a thing.

Why is it so hard for our government to copy a system such as France's? If we were truly as smart as we claim to be we would be doing just that.

I am not proud to be an American much these days. I am too sick and frustrated to agree with political grid-lock. If that's what being American is all about then I think I need to find another country.

A quote and a story with a moral about morals or (at least) consciences.

My employer, Catholic Community Services-St. Mary's for Men, was asking its employees for quotes so that they can put them up on the wall of our building. So I decided to create my own and it says: "True happiness isn't obtained or purchased. True happiness comes from within and everyone is entitled to it because what's within all of us is God." --Tamara Nicholas, October 1, 2009

I thought it was befitting for a Catholic facility. Apparently the gal accepting the quotes didn't agree with me because she didn't use it. Does it suck that bad?

On the subject of this gal (who will remain nameless) at work who was accepting the quotes... Three or four weeks ago the RCA (that's what I am) who works weekdays, day shift went to the hospital ER with chest pain. It turned out he had a torn aorta and needed emergency open heart surgery. Well, he was in ICU several days then transferred to telemetry for about a week then discharged. As you can imagine his medical bills were expected to be more than he could handle since the position of RCA only pays between $9.00 and $10.00 an hour. Our insurance benefits (which our employer pays 100% of the premium on the employee only) doesn't cover jack shit.

So, this "gal" at work who does the payroll sent out a company-wide email stating that all employees who wish to contribute to a fund for the employee who was in the hospital could do so via their payroll check. It was to be an after tax deduction of whatever amount we wished to contribute. I thought it was very nice for them to do this for my co-worker. I, myself, have been going through many health issues and have had several ER visits, blood work, radiology tests, and doctor visits (even a colonoscopy and endoscopy which total over $1800.00 for the two scopes alone). I was forced to file a chapter 13 after being out of work for over two years and having several huge kidney stones which took six months and many ER visits, blood work, radiology tests, and doctor visits for the "professionals" to find the stones. After they found them I had lithotripsy done to break them up so I could pass them which (after the COBRA insurance paid their portion I was left owing $700 for that procedure alone - not to mention that the premiums for the COBRA were over $300/month) back in 2008.

Anyway, medical bills exceeding $5000 on top of my insurance premiums and having to use credit cards in order to eat and buy gas to transport me to job interviews and my husband to work (not to mention I lost my business due to this prolonged illness that could have been diagnosed immediately if any of the "professionals" knew what they were doing) forced us into bankruptcy court. I know this is a long story but the point I'm trying to set up here is that I have been accruing tons and tons of medical bills after filing for chapter 13 so I can not add these newer medical expenses to the bankruptcy. I have to pay everything I owe (which is over $5,000 at this point due to the crappy coverage and pre-existing clause) or they will send me to collections who will then garnish 25% of my pay - one creditor at a time which could go on for quite a while.

My point? Well, even though I am financially ruined (myself) I knew that my friend at work would need help because his bills would be so high. Even though I struggle to meet my basic needs with the menial income I have and the overwhelming amount of debt I owe I still sent an email reply to this "gal" in payroll telling her to take $20 out of my check to donate to the friend in need. I am not expecting koodos because that's not what motivated me to help. What the final moral to this story is goes like this. When my friend's daughter came in to pick up his first check after going into the hospital the woman from "upstairs" came to give her the check and told her, "there's an extra $20 as well." I about lost it inside my head. I couldn't believe that no one else contributed to help this guy out. Many, many more "higher-ups" who have much higher salaries than me or the guy in the hospital couldn't find an extra $5.00 or even $1.00 to contribute. Not one other person, not even the "gal" who drafted and sent the email asking for donations. How jacked up and greedy has our society become for this to be true?

I was appauled when I heard my former boss who took a promotion out of that position tell his daughter, "there's an extra $20" like that was something fucking spectacular. It was a disgrace. That money (by itself, ie, only $20) would have been better served if I'd kept it and applied it to my own heavy medical expenses. Twenty dollars, alone, will not do a thing for this man and all the bills he'll be stuck paying. If that doesn't make anyone else say, "what the fuck?" Then, apparently, I'm the only one in the world who has retained their intelligence and/or sanity.

People make me so fucking sick sometimes (most of the time). I really wish there were more good-hearted and generous people in the world because the world wouldn't be such a shit-hole if that were the case. Unfortunately (for all of us who still have a conscience left within ourselves) the world is a shit-hole ran by ass-bags who aren't worthy to breathe our air. They are sucking the oxygen that we need while they get rich doing it, screwing us both physically and financially all the way to the bank. But hey, they can afford to get sick. They are the ones who get to live and live well. Shouldn't we be happy sacraficing our own health and quality of life to assist such cold-hearted, conscience lacking individuals to further evolve and spread their sickness of greed and selfishness? I think not. I say that they start selling hunting licenses to all the decent people in the world allowing for open season on ass-bags.

That's all. But who really gives a shit anyway?

The old blogger "Are You Serious?"

Hi, my name is Tamara Nicholas (formerly Imes) and I would like to welcome you all to "Are You Serious?". A Blog where the rhetoric is, at times, not so serious but the topics and issues are always very  in your face.

I hope everyone and anyone from everywhere and anywhere will find this a place to kick up their heels and let their hair down. No one's opinion is disregarded here. On the same note it may not be agreed with either. So--

Pray for the sinners--ain't none of us saints. There's cause for alarm, but it's never too late. Say what you want, play what you want, spray what you want, but today here's a thought.

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. God's coming quick, but Satan's coming first.

Open your heart and start with a prayer. Today is all gone, but tomorrow is there. Never be greedy and always be true. Ask with sincerity and you'll know what to do. The end's drawing nearer. I can't say it clearer. I'm reaching out to you with both hands. Now grab them...

Peace!

Are You Serious? on Yuku

Are You Serious? on Yuku. Are You Serious? on Windows Live. There is an "Are You Serious?" on blogger, but it doesn't allow me to edit any of it and it says it's inaccessable sometimes. Hmmm. What to do about that issue? Well, for now, I'll recommend that you check out the other two sites for this writing group.
